To answer this question, we can look at what our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate. Our ancestors thrived on a diet high in animal protein and fat and low in carbohydrates. Advancements in technology and agriculture made way for mass production of foods. Unfortunately humans were introduced to processed food and an influx of wheat, corn, soy, and sugar products. When we eat what we are genetically designed to eat, we look, feel, and perform better. The paleo diet includes meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, a little starch and no sugar. Foods to be avoided include sugar/sugar substitutes, grain/wheat based products, legumes, and vegetable oils. A paleo diet reduces inflammation in the body and protects against a host of diseases, including metabolic and autoimmune disease.
