Paleo: feel, look, and perform better

If you want to look, feel, and perform better you must start with how you eat.

Working out is definitely part of the solution for getting and staying healthy, but it only takes us so far. If you want to look, feel, and perform better you must start with diet. Think of your body as an engine. What you put in it matters. If you don’t fuel it well, it will still run but over time you will begin to have problems.

What fuels our bodies best?

To answer this question, we can look at what our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate. Our ancestors thrived on a diet high in animal protein and fat and low in carbohydrates. Advancements in technology and agriculture made way for mass production of foods. Unfortunately humans were introduced to processed food and an influx of wheat, corn, soy, and sugar products. As consumption of these foods has increased, so has obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzhiemers, among many other diseases. Read more.

When we eat what we are genetically designed to eat, we look, feel, and perform better. The paleo diet includes meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, a little starch and no sugar. Foods to be avoided include sugar/sugar substitutes, grain/wheat based products, legumes, and vegetable oils. A paleo diet reduces inflammation in the body and protects against a host of diseases, including metabolic and autoimmune disease.

But I’m addicted to bread!

You’re right about that! Gluten and sugar activate opiate receptors in our brains that make us crave them. Once you cut them out, the cravings subside. You will notice you think more clearly and have increased energy throughout the day.

Look Good Naked!

Another side-effect of the diet is loss of extra body fat. I know, bummer right?
